'I started to paint in 1981 under the tuition of Peter Coate, RWA, ‘paint what you see’ was his motto. I found that I could not always capture everything that I saw in a traditional format, so I began to explore different art styles and became fascinated by medieval painters, who didn’t understand perspective, and wanted to depict an event in history, capturing as much information as possible, in a single painting. This meant that figures, buildings, landscape etc., were out of proportion to each other, but captured the whole event in a single picture'.
John then helped to set up and run the Spacex studios in Exeter where he painted and exhibited for four years. There he met Terry Frost who invited him to join his new course at Reading University, where he gained his Masters degree in Fine Art. He settled in Cornwall and for the next fifteen years painted full time exhibiting in galleries in St Ives, London and New York. In 1996 he moved to Morocco where he exhibited at international galleries in Marrakech, Casablanca and Tangiers. His work is held in many private collections around the world, most notably in the House of Hermes, who have a large number of his paintings.
