Large still life, 'Clementines and Walnuts' Poppy Ellis
£0.01 Sold out
Large still life by contemporary British artist, Poppy Ellis.
In this joyous painting Ellis unleashes a childhood memory of delft blue and willow pattern. A 19thC Dutch Delft, Queen Mary plate sits alongside a piece of her mother's Booth's Willow patten collection. Vibrant clementines spill over the surface and walnuts, in and out of their shells, are strewn amongst the eclectic grouping. Wonderful, richly painted roses and berries in a scratched jug. A midnight blue sky with glorious combed textures. The background is a patchwork quilt of papery pinks and turquoises, the 15th century St Thomas-A-Becket Church in Fairfield stands alone on its isolated Marsh island.
About the Artist
Poppy Ellis is a painter, she lives on the edge of the English Channel in a wind swept corner of Kent.
Ellis grew up in Sunderland and studied Illustration at Newcastle. She has worked as an art director in publishing, packaging and food styling.
Ellis is inspired by folklore and fairy tales, secrets and puzzles. Her pieces are narrative, often connecting themes from her childhood. Red Riding Hood may be juxtaposed with the Tale of Jeremy Fisher. Vases of tissue paper, poppies sit happy with a Feegee Mermaid.
Her style layers painterly and abstract with graphic elements and patterns. Her still life painting mixes old and new pieces, medieval ceramics mingle with contemporary pottery.
Ellis worked as an art director in London for many years and has now traded in her train pass for her studio which she shares with her husband and two barky dogs.
